No. PNR 010/02For release - December 11, 2002
REGINA, SK — The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister Responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board, on behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette, today announced that the name of the Regina Airport has been officially changed to "Regina International Airport". This will allow the Regina Airport Authority to better promote the airport as an international destination that provides customs, agriculture and health inspection services that are associated with the international status.
"This announcement is great news for the Regina area, and indeed for the whole province," said Mr. Goodale. "This airport is a vital facility, connecting Regina to the rest of Canada and the world."
"The Regina International Airport plays an essential role in Saskatchewan's transportation system," said Mr. Collenette. "It will enhance the Regina International Airport's position as an engine of growth for all of Saskatchewan."
Transport Canada will take the appropriate steps to inform the domestic and international community of the new name by publishing it in various aeronautical publications including the Canada Air Pilot, the Canada Flight Supplement, the Designated Airspace Handbook, and aeronautical charts.
"The initiative to designate the Regina Airport with international status is welcome news and sends a clear message to our community that our facility is indeed a gateway to the world and further solidifies our position as a vital transportation link for Southern Saskatchewan," said Steven Burchi, President and CEO of the Regina Airport Authority.
Operational, managerial and developmental control of the airport was transferred from the Government of Canada to the Regina Airport Authority in April 1999. Under the National Airports Policy, announced in July 1994, Regina International Airport is designated as part of the National Airports System (NAS) and an essential component of Canada's air transportation network.
