Royal Canadian Navy Leadership
Responsibility for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) is organized in a split structure, with leadership from the formations feeding into Naval Staff Headquarters, and the Commander of the RCN. Learn more about the RCN’s leadership below.
Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy
The Commander of the RCN is the most senior appointment in the RCN. This appointment also includes the title Chief of the Naval Staff and is based at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario. The rank associated with the appointment is vice admiral.
Deputy Commander Royal Canadian Navy
The second-most senior appointment in the RCN. The Deputy Commander provides direct support to the Commander and is ready to act on the Commander’s behalf when required. As the Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff, the Deputy Commander primarily manages governance structures and policies within the RCN. The rank associated with the appointment is rear admiral.
Command Chief Petty Officer of the Royal Canadian Navy
The Command Chief Petty Officer of the RCN is the senior non-commissioned sailor in Canada’s navy. The primary role of the Command Chief is to provide the Commander of the RCN the non-commissioned member’s (NCM) perspective on behalf of all NCMs within the Navy.
Command team of Maritime Forces Atlantic
The leadership structure of Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) is made up of the Commander Joint Task Force Atlantic, the Maritime Forces Atlantic Chief Petty Officer, Commander Canadian Fleet Atlantic and the Base Commander Canadian Forces Base Halifax. The Commander of MARLANT also acts as RCN Assistant Chief of Staff Operations, responsible for coordinating and commanding naval operations and Commander of Maritime Component Command.
Command team of Maritime Forces Pacific
The leadership structure of Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC) is made up of the Commander of Maritime Forces Pacific, the Maritime Forces Pacific Chief Petty Officer, Commander Canadian Fleet Pacific and the Base Commander of Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt. The Commander of MARPAC also acts as RCN Assistant Chief of Staff Personnel and Training, responsible for the training and development of naval personnel.
Command Team of the Naval Reserve
The leadership structure of the Naval Reserve HQ in Québec City, is made up of the Commander Naval Reserve, and the Naval Reserve Chief Petty Officer.
