He is the author of nearly 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and of 30 book chapters and reports, as well as a regular contributor to news media and radio.
Dr. Hoffman's research integrates analytical, empirical and big data methods to craft global strategies that better address transnational health threats and social inequalities, such as antimicrobial resistance, falsified medicine, health misinformation, pandemics, poverty, tobacco and vaccine hesitancy.
Dr. Hoffman holds a PhD in Health Policy from Harvard University, a Juris Doctor and an MA in Political Science from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Health Sciences from McMaster University. He previously worked for the World Health Organization and the United Nations Secretary-General's Office.
As Scientific Director of CIHR's Institute of Population and Public Health, Dr. Hoffman will work with the Canadian population and public health research community and stakeholders to identify research priorities, develop research funding opportunities, build partnerships and translate research evidence into policy and practice to improve the health of Canadians and people around the world. Finally, as a member of CIHR's leadership team, he will participate in setting and implementing CIHR's strategic directions, particularly in global health research as CIHR's lead for this area.
