Government of Canada opens call for proposals for projects to protect and empower Canadian consumers

News release

December 9, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario

Everyday in the marketplace, Canadians feel financial pressure due to retail practices that inflate the price of products and services.

It is important to support organizations working in the interest of consumers to expose the challenges Canadians are facing and ensure consumer rights are promoted and protected.

Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced an open call for proposals for projects to protect and empower Canadian consumers.

Through the Canadian Consumer Protection Initiative (CCPI), Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada is seeking to fund projects that will provide insight on the retail practices increasing costs for consumers and to create resources that will provide Canadians with the information they need to make informed purchasing decisions.

Priority topics for proposals sought through this open call include consumer protection, consumers and the financial sector, affordability, and sustainable consumption. Further information on eligible organizations and priority topics is available in the CCPI Applicant Guide.

These projects will empower Canadians by providing tools and information to help them avoid paying unnecessary fees or costs.”
– The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry

Quick facts

  • The CCPI supports organizations in the production of high quality, independent and timely research to support the consumer's role in the marketplace. The initiative also aims to help strengthen capacity building for consumer organizations so they can fulfil their mandates, increase their visibility, membership and self-sufficiency in the interest of Canadian consumers.

  • Eligibility for the CCPI has expanded. Eligible applicants now include not-for-profit organizations, post-secondary academic institutions, research institutes and Indigenous organizations. These changes were made in an effort to increase the number of proposals that are representative of the diverse population of Canadian consumers and reflect the unique perspectives of these groups.

  • This program is managed by ISED's Office of Consumer Affairs.
