A family member of someone who applied for permanent residence needs a work permit.
If you’re a family member who has been included on an application for permanent residence, you need a work permit to work in Canada.
You may be eligible for an open work permit if you’ve been included on an application for permanent residence that has been found complete or has received a positive eligibility assessment. Your application must be under 1 of the following:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Canadian experience class
- Provincial Nominee Program
- Federal Skilled Trades Program
- Quebec-selected skilled workers
- caring for children class
- caring for people with high medical needs class
- Agri-Food Pilot
- Permanent residence pathways for Hong Kong residents
You may also be eligible for an open work permit if you’ve been included on an application for permanent residence based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds and the application has been approved in principle.
You also need to meet the general eligibility requirements for a work permit.
Type of work permit
When you complete your work permit application, select “Open work permit” as the type of work permit in the “Details of intended work in Canada” section. Leave the employer section of the application blank when you apply for your open work permit.
