How to apply for a work permit at a port of entry
You should apply for your work permit before you travel to Canada. However, you can apply for a work permit when you enter Canada if you’re eligible.
Before you come to Canada
- Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements to get a work permit at the port of entry.
- If you don’t meet the requirements, your work permit application will be refused.
- Get a medical exam if you need one.
New rules about where to apply for a PGWP
As of June 21, 2024, you can no longer apply for a PGWP at a port of entry (airport, land or marine border) when entering Canada.
When you arrive at the port of entry
Tell the officer that you want a work permit. The officer will check
- your passport or other travel document
- that you meet the eligibility requirements
- that your medical certificate is valid, if you need one
If you’re applying for an employer-specific work permit
If you need a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) for your job, you need to bring
- your job offer
- a copy of the LMIA
- an LMIA number
- proof that you meet the qualifications and experience for the job
If you want to work in Quebec, you may also need an attestation of issuance of your Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) from the ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration.
If you don’t need an LMIA, you don’t need a CAQ to work in Quebec.
If you don’t need an LMIA for your job, you need to bring:
- your job offer
- the offer of employment number from your employer
- proof that you do not need an LMIA for the job
- proof that you meet the qualifications and experience for the job
