National Occupational Classification 2021
On November 16, 2022, we switched to the 2021 version of the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
Use the NOC 2016 page if the community got your application on or before November 15, 2022.
How to prove your language ability
To prove your language skills in English or French, you need to take an approved language test. To do this:
- schedule your test with an approved agency
- pay the test costs
After you get the results of your test, compare them to the charts below to see what Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level you have.
What to include in your application
If you meet the minimum score of in all 4 abilities, include a copy of the test results with your application.
These results must be less than 2 years old when you apply. Keep a copy of them for your records and future use.
The minimum score depends on the NOC TEER category of your job offer:
The minimum language requirements are based on the NOC TEER category of your job offer
- job offer in TEER 0 or 1: CLB 6
- job offer in TEER 2 or 3: CLB 5
- job offer in TEER 4 or 5: CLB 4

TEF Canada
Note: For applications received through the Express Entry (EE) system, language level will be based on the “Équivalence ancien score” (previous score equivalency) which is the Test score equivalency chart for tests taken before September 30, 2019.
Applicants are instructed to only enter the scores for each language ability from that column into their EE electronic applications for permanent residence (e-APR) regardless of the date the test was taken. All other TEF Canada score equivalency charts are not compatible with our system at this time.
The attestation de résultats (statement of results) will also include test results in the column marked “Score / 699.” If these results were entered into the Express Entry profile, it may produce an incorrect NCLC equivalency.
If you took your test after December 10, 2023
