Search of citizenship records
This section contains policy, procedures and guidance used by IRCC staff. It is posted on the department’s website as a courtesy to stakeholders.
A search of citizenship records verifies citizenship registration records for citizens and non-citizens. There are three basic reasons a person would request a search for citizenship records:
- the applicant does not have proof of citizenship;
- the applicant has proof of citizenship but needs a letter saying how and/or when citizenship was obtained;
- a third party asks for citizenship confirmation.
Accessing citizenship records

The three reasons someone would request a Record Letter:
- the applicant does not have proof of citizenship
