Backgrounder : Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan support five major highway rehabilitation projects
Backgrounder
All five projects announced today were approved under the Highways and Roads category of the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – National and Regional Projects. Under the program, the Government of Canada will contribute up to 50 percent of total eligible costs and the Government of Saskatchewan will be responsible for all remaining costs of the project. The details of the funding were delivered to Saskatchewan and will be released publicly at the completion of the tendering process.
Highway No. 1 Rehabilitation
Highway 1 serves as the Saskatchewan section of the Trans-Canada Highway mainland route and is part of the National Highway System (NHS), which supports economic activity on a national, provincial and regional level. This project involves the rehabilitation of over 31 kilometres of two-lane highway sections near Gull Lake. Undertaking these improvements now will ensure a longer lifespan for this major east-west commercial transport route which also serves as the main link between southern Saskatchewan’s largest cities.
Highway No. 2 Rehabilitation
Part of the NHS, Highway 2 is a two-lane north-south route that is also part of the CanAm international highway, linking Saskatchewan to the state of Montana. The project corridor extends from Moose Jaw to the access to Sand Point Beach. Along this route, more than 19 kilometres of highway will be resurfaced and dedicated lanes for passing traffic will be added to two highway-to-highway intersections near the Village of Tuxford, which will reduce the risk of collisions and improve safety.
Highway No. 11 Rehabilitation
This four-lane divided highway is part of the core NHS—the backbone of the provincial transportation network. As part of this project, nine two-lane segments of Highway 11 between Regina and Saskatoon will be repaved, totaling 113 kilometres of rehabilitation, increasing safety on one of Saskatchewan’s busiest roads. The improvements are expected to extend the life of the roadway by over 25 years, while allowing for continued growth in the region. As part of this project, 6.5 kilometres of Highway 20 will also be repaved between Lumsden and Craven and safety improvements will be made to the junction where Highways 11 and 20 meet.
Highway No. 16 Rehabilitation
This project includes the repaving of more than 21 kilometres of Highway 16 in segments to the west and south of Yorkton, as well as between Foam Lake and Elfros. In addition, over 12 kilometres of Highway 10 south of Yorkton will be repaved and the intersection of Highway 16 and the main access to Foam Lake will be widened to allow through traffic to navigate around turning traffic. These improvements to the Saskatchewan section of the Yellowhead Highway will improve driving conditions, extend the life of the highway and increase safety for motorists.
Highway No. 39 Rehabilitation
Each year, approximately 100,000 trucks transport $6 billion in trade goods along Highway 39, part of the NHS and an important trade corridor that links the province to the state of North Dakota as part of the CanAm Highway. With this project, over 16 kilometres of the two-lane highway will be repaved between Weyburn and Lang, Saskatchewan. Safety improvements will also be made to two intersections in Weyburn, ensuring safer travel through the city.
