Changes to the registration of thiram pesticides

All pesticides used in Canada must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act. Pesticides are re-evaluated to ensure that they continue to meet health and environmental requirements. Re-evaluation may result in the revocation of a product or product uses. Health Canada may also request changes to a product's label, including mitigation measures, use sites and application methods.

Thiram is a fungicide used as seed treatment, foliar application on tree fruits, strawberry and celery, root dip of sweet potato sprouts, and as an animal repellent to protect dormant outdoor ornamentals and young fruit trees. The re-evaluation of the active ingredient thiram was published on December 14, 2018.

• On-farm dry seed treatment
• On-farm wettable powder slurry seed treatment of the following crops:
  • alfalfa
  • beans
  • dry bulb onions
  • grasses
  • mustard
  • peas
  • soybeans
• On-farm liquid hopper box/seed drill treatment

Other risk reduction measures

Agricultural use

• Addition to the required personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Closed mixing, loading and treatment system may be required, depending on the type of seed treatment and the crop treated
• Closed cabin equipped with a filter preventing contact between occupant and pesticides may be required, depending on the type of seed treatment and the crop treated
• Treated seed must be thoroughly covered with soil during sowing
• Clean-up, bury or cover all spilled seeds with soil

Animal repellent for ornamental plants

• Addition to the required personal protective equipment (PPE)
• No entry to the treated area until spray has dried
• Limit of 44 g of active ingredient handled per day for paintbrush application
• No paintbrush application of domestic products

Users must follow the instructions on the updated labels.

Using a pesticide contrary to the label directions is a violation of the Pest Control Products Act.
