Changes to the registration of pymetrozin pesticides

All pesticides used in Canada must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act. Pesticides are re-evaluated to ensure that they continue to meet health and environmental requirements. Re-evaluation may result in the revocation of a product or product uses. Health Canada may also request changes to a product's label, including risk mitigation measures, use sites and application methods.

Pymetrozine is an insecticide used on many field and greenhouse crops primarily to control aphids. Key elements of the special review decision for the active ingredient pymetrozine, published on May 6, 2021, are summarized below.

Cancelled uses

Stop outdoor use on the following crops:

• Leafy vegetables (crop group 4)^{Footnote *}
• Potatoes
• Highbush blueberry
• Tobacco
• Rhodiola rosea
• Outdoor ornamental plants
• Christmas trees

Only uses in greenhouses are maintained.

Other risk reduction measures

• Update of the personal protective equipment (PPE) required
• For ornamental plants grown in greenhouses for the production of cut flowers:
  • Maximum spray volume of 1,000 L of solution/ha
  • Reduction of the maximum application rate
• For greenhouse vegetables, maximum spray volume of 2,000 L solution/ha
• Addition of a statement that prohibits the contamination of aquatic habitats by the discharge of effluent or runoff from greenhouses

Users must follow the instructions on the updated labels.

Using a pesticide contrary with the label directions is a violation of the Pest Control Products Act.
