Changes to the registration of naled pesticides

All pesticides used in Canada must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act. Pesticides are re-evaluated to ensure that they continue to meet health and environmental requirements. Re-evaluation may result in the revocation of a product or product uses. Health Canada may also request changes to a product's label, including risk mitigation measures, use sites and application methods.

Naled is an organophosphate insecticide used in agricultural production, ornamental production (greenhouse and field), woodlands, pasture and structural sites (extermination). Key elements of the special review decision, released on January 12, 2022, are summarized below.

The only pesticide containing naled registered in Canada as of March 31, 2023, is DIBROM EC (Registration No. 7442).

Cancelled uses

Stop use on the following field crops:

• Beans (dry or field)
• Lima beans
• Peas (processing)
• Alfalfa
• Clover
• Vetch
• Potato
• Sugar beats

Stop use on the following sites:

• Rangelands, fields and pastures (against grasshoppers)
• In and around structures, including dairy barns and livestock barns, pig pens, poultry, houses, cider houses and wineries
• Woodlands

Stop all uses in a greenhouse or inside any other structure

Other risk reduction measures

• Prohibition of the following mode of application:
  • Aerial application, unless otherwise specified for a crop or site. In this case, the aircraft pilot cannot perform mixing or loading
  • Application with an ultra-low volume (ULV) sprayer
  • Application with handheld mistblower/fogger
• Prohibition of use in residential area
• Addition to the personal protective equipment (PPE) required, by type of activity and application equipment
• Closed system required when mixing and loading for boom sprayers, airblast sprayers and aerial application
• During the flowering period, application allowed in the evening only Restriction of the quantity of product handled per day, by type of activity and application equipment
• Addition of detailed information on poisoning symptoms and treatment options in toxicological information section
• Prohibition of use in aquatic environment
• Addition of the warning: "Apply the recommended rate in a minimum spray volume of 10 litres/hectare"
• Addition of warnings and prohibitions to protect bees, pollinators and other non-target organisms
• Addition of buffer zones
• Prohibition of the use of No. 2 fuel oil as a diluent for aerial application

Users must follow the instructions on the updated labels.

Using a pesticide contrary with the label directions is a violation of the Pest Control Products Act.
