Background
Health Canada's Food Directorate completed a safety assessment of iodine for use in supplemented foods.
Health Canada published a Notice of Health Canada's proposal to enable the use of iodine as a supplemental ingredient in foods (NOP/ADP SI-005) on November 9, 2022. The proposal was open to the public for comment for 75 days. A summary of the comments that were provided during this period with any applicable responses is available in the information document referenced below.
The results of this safety assessment support the safety of iodine for use in supplemented foods. Consequently, Health Canada has enabled the use of iodine described in the information document below by modifying the List of permitted supplemental ingredients, effective September 8, 2023.
