Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Food Additives with Other Accepted Uses to Update a Reference Linked with Front-of-Package Nutrition Labelling- Reference Number: NOM/ADM-0187 [2022-07-20]

Background

From time to time, Health Canada may make minor modifications to the Lists of Permitted Food Additives, such as changes to correct errors, improve clarity, achieve consistency in the terms used in the lists, or to align the lists with amendments of Part B of the Food and Drug Regulations (Regulations). These minor changes are not intended to change the permitted uses of food additives.

The amendments to the Regulations to require front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labelling for most prepackaged food products repealed the table of nutrient content claims that followed section B.01.513 and incorporated it by reference into the Regulations as a new Table of Permitted Nutrient Content Statements and Claims. As a result, in the List of Permitted Food Additives with Other Accepted Uses, Health Canada has replaced the reference to the "table following section B.01.513" with a reference to the "Table of Permitted Nutrient Content Statements and Claims" in entries that permit the use of microcrystalline cellulose and powdered cellulose in unstandardized foods meeting the requirements set out in this table for the subject "Reduced in energy". This modification is now effective.

The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for inquiries or feedback on this modification.
