Minister Hussen to travel to Brazil to attend G20 Development Ministerial Meeting

The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, will participate in the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 22 and 23, 2024.

Under the theme of Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet, this year’s meeting will provide an opportunity to highlight Canada’s leadership in promoting climate action, global health and food security and human dignity, in line with its Feminist International Assistance Policy.

Minister Hussen will also meet with his counterparts to further discuss opportunities for collaboration between Canada and G20 members on international development.

Following the ministerial meeting, Minister Hussen will attend a joint meeting of G20 development and finance ministers on July 24, 2024, also in Rio de Janeiro. This meeting will bring together officials from G20 countries, invited guest countries and international organizations to reinforce their commitment to addressing global hunger and poverty and to establishing the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, which is planned to launch at the G20 summit in November 2024. 

Finally, from July 25 to 26, Minister Hussen will travel to Salvador, also in Brazil, where he will meet state representatives and members of civil society organizations to discuss political and economic development priorities and efforts to promote human rights, in particular, gender and racial equity, and explore collaboration opportunities.

  • The G20 is the primary forum for international economic cooperation among its members. These include the world’s major developed and emerging economies and represent all inhabited continents.

  • In 2023, the G20 comprised 19 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States. It also included 2 regional bodies: the African Union and the European Union.

  • G20 members represent around 85% of global GDP, over 75% of global trade and about two-thirds of the world’s population.
