Minister Ng attends Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada Annual Convention

Canada leads a globally competitive and responsible mining sector at the cutting edge of technological innovation.
Yesterday, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, attended the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Annual Convention to promote Canada’s mining expertise and leadership.
The Minister connected with representatives of the Mining Association of Canada and key industry leaders who help to position Canada as the top country in the world for sustainable mining—a country that is committed to a carbon-neutral future and responsible business conduct.
The Minister highlighted the $3.8-billion Canadian Critical Minerals Strategy, which is designed to position Canada as a supplier of choice for international investors. She also met with members of the Mining Association of Canada and discussed the Towards Sustainable Mining initiative, supported by the Trade Commissioner Service, which ensures responsible and sustainable operations around the world.
At the convention, Minister Ng met with Alberto Otárola, Prime Minister of Peru, and Alex Contreras, Minister of Economy and Finance of Peru. They discussed the long-standing positive trade relationship between Canada and Peru and explored new opportunities to collaborate on advancing inclusive trade.

The PDAC annual convention is the world’s largest and most important international mining industry gathering.

In recent years, the convention has attracted more than 25,000 people from 130 countries.

In December 2022, Canada launched the Canadian Critical Minerals Strategy, which aims to build industrial ecosystems where all stages of the value chain are developed and integrated both domestically and with trading partners.

In 2021, the minerals sector directly and indirectly accounted for 664,000 jobs throughout Canada in urban, rural, and remote regions, and was valued at $97 billion—4% of Canada’s total nominal GDP.

Mineral exports accounted for 22% of Canada’s total domestic exports.

The minerals sector invested $14.4 billion in new capital construction and in machinery and equipment, accounting for 5% of total non-residential capital investment in Canada.

Mineral production totalled $55.5 billion; Canada produces some 60 minerals and metals at about 200 mines and 6,500 sand and gravel pits and stone quarries.

Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service has over 1,200 mining clients.
