Today, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, spoke with the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for International Trade Anne-Marie Trevelyan.
During the meeting, Minister Ng underlined Canada’s strong people-to-people and cultural ties with the United Kingdom and emphasized how the 2 countries’ commercial partnership is vital to achieving a sustainable and inclusive global economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ministers discussed how international collaboration is essential to strengthening the rules-based multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core. Minister Ng thanked the United Kingdom for its ongoing and active participation in the Ottawa Group on WTO reform and noted that despite the postponement of the WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference, cooperation on key issues, such as trade and health, as well as sustainable fisheries, must continue.
Minister Ng was pleased to announce that Canada has tabled its notice of intent to enter into negotiations toward a Canada-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement. These negotiations will be an opportunity to continue to expand and strengthen trade ties with the United Kingdom, Canada’s third-largest partner country for trade in goods and services.
Minister Ng also reiterated that Canada remains strongly committed to working with the United Kingdom bilaterally and to its accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
