Minister Joly meets United Kingdom’s foreign secretary

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met with Elizabeth Truss, the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, on the margins of the NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to collective security and to working together to address pressing international issues, particularly in Eastern Europe. Minister Joly and Foreign Secretary Truss condemned the human rights violations in Belarus by the Lukashenko regime, and they also reiterated their strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Minister Joly and Foreign Secretary Truss then stressed the importance of multilateral action, particularly in ensuring unhindered humanitarian access to Afghanistan and Ethiopia. They shared their perspectives on those situations, and they agreed on the need to safeguard human rights.

Minister Joly and Foreign Secretary Truss reaffirmed their common support for holding Iran to account for the downing of Flight PS752. To conclude, Minister Joly and Foreign Secretary Truss also discussed the United Kingdom’s plans to host the upcoming G7 foreign ministers meeting.
