The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced she will attend a meeting of Lima Group members in Guatemala City, Guatemala, on Thursday, June 6, 2019, as the crisis in Venezuela continues to deepen.

“The Venezuelan people have called for the end of the Maduro dictatorship and a return to democracy, despite the violent repression of the regime. The Guatemala meeting of the Lima Group will build on the important work that Canada is doing with its Lima Group partners to support the people of Venezuela, as well as Juan Guaidó and the National Assembly, in their fight for democracy.”

• Over 4 million Venezuelans have been forced to flee their homes since 2015 in search of food, health care and other basic services.

• The Lima Group was established on August 8, 2017, in Lima, Peru, to coordinate participating countries’ efforts and apply international pressure on the Maduro regime.

• The Lima Group, which now includes the interim government of Venezuela, is committed to supporting the efforts of the Venezuelan people to restore constitutional democracy in their country.

• Canada hosted the Lima Group on October 26, 2017, and February 4, 2019, in Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario, respectively.
