Canada welcomes Myanmar’s decision to grant amnesty to Reuters journalists

Statement

May 7, 2019 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the presidential amnesty granted to the two Reuters journalists in Myanmar:

“Canada welcomes Myanmar’s decision to release Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, a request Canada has repeatedly advocated for. Today’s decision marks a positive step forward for freedom of expression and democracy in Myanmar. These are values that Canada has, and will always, uphold.

“A free and independent press is the cornerstone of any safe and prosperous society. It plays a crucial role in defending human rights, inclusion and diversity; holding the powerful to account; demanding transparency from governments; and protecting the rule of law and strengthening democracy.

“Canada commends Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo for their journalistic integrity and personal courage – and we thank Amal Clooney and Reuters for their principled leadership. We are pleased that the journalists have rejoined their families and will be able to continue their vital work.”
