Foreign Affairs Minister to participate in NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will be in Brussels, Belgium, on April 27, 2018, to participate in the NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting. 

Minister Freeland and her counterparts will discuss matters affecting transatlantic security, including the coordinated international response to Russia’s irresponsible actions and the role of NATO Allies in bolstering the rules-based international order.

The Minister will reaffirm Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine and take the opportunity to discuss NATO’s work with other partners, including its political engagement and defence capacity-building efforts in countries such as Iraq and those in the Western Balkans, as well as exchange views on recent developments in Afghanistan. Minister Freeland and her counterparts will also plan for the upcoming NATO Leaders’ Summit to be held in Brussels, Belgium, on July 11 and 12, 2018.

Throughout, the Minister will highlight Canada’s leadership role in the Alliance, including its ongoing role as the Framework Nation leading NATO’s multinational enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup in Latvia.

  • Canada assumed a leadership role as one of four NATO Framework Nations in June 2017, leading a robust multinational battlegroup in Latvia.
