Canada condemns announcement made by Venezuela’s National Constituent Assembly

Statements

August 18, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the situation in Venezuela:

“Canada is alarmed by the Venezuelan government’s deepening descent into dictatorship. We condemn the announcement made today by the National Constituent Assembly, stating that it will assume core law-making functions of the democratically elected National Assembly.

“We continue to fully support and show solidarity with the National Assembly, the only legitimate legislative body in Venezuela. Its powers must be restored.

“Canada again rejects the Maduro regime’s ongoing campaign of political repression. The politically motivated imprisonment of opposition mayors and the undermining of parliamentary immunity is not a path toward dialogue and peace.

“Canada stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan people as they struggle to restore their democracy. We support efforts to re-establish a meaningful and effective dialogue as the only viable means to resolve Venezuela’s crisis.”
