Backgrounder
Overview
A contribution agreement was signed with the Centre de recherche sur les milieux insulaires et maritimes (CERMIM), as part of funding from the Habitat Stewardship Program (HSP) for a two-year project.
A total of $168,265 in financial contributions from DFO will be allocated to initiatives to help save right whales and species at risk in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Main components of the project:
- Outing dedicated to the location and removal of abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and underwater imaging of this gear.
- A mission at sea to collect aerial and underwater images and videos of North Atlantic right whales and other marine mammals or species at risk (blue whales, leatherback turtles, great white sharks, wolffish).
- Creation of an awareness program for fish harvesters on issues related to ALDFG and species at risk in the Gulf of St. Lawrence based on the images and videos collected.
