Backgrounder
Overview
A contribution agreement was signed with the Comité Zone d’Intervention Prioritaire (ZIP) des Îles-de-la-Madeleine as part of funding under the Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Fund for a three-year project.
A total of $499,590 in financial contributions from DFO will be allocated to mobilization and concerted action to combat aquatic invasive species on the Magdalen Islands.
Main components of the project:
- Setting up self-contained cleaning stations for pleasure craft.
- Consolidation of the community monitoring network and green crab capture campaigns at the start of the season, before the females lay their eggs.
- Follow-up and intervention actions to limit the spread of the yellow ascidian (manual removal of individuals where density permits, and wider detection on other at-risk wharves).
- Consultation, intervention planning and training on aquatic invasive species.
