FedNor invests over $4.5 million to upgrade public community spaces across Northern Ontario

News release

Government of Canada works with community partners to create jobs and help local economies thrive in  Northern Ontario.

July 22, 2022 – Sudbury, ON – Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario – FedNor

Shared public spaces are at the heart of local communities across Canada. They draw in residents and visitors alike, supporting local businesses and jobs. In Northern Ontario, as in so many places across Canada, these spaces have seen a significant reduction in use as Canadians took precautions over the last few years.

Canadian cities and towns flourish when they have community public spaces to promote social interaction and physical activity and provide access to recreational programs and facilities. These amenities are integral to the overall well-being of individuals, families and communities.

Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced FedNor investments totalling $4,531,559, through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF), for 12 projects that will help Northern Ontario municipalities, organizations and Indigenous communities build and improve community infrastructure so they can rebound from the effects COVID-19. These investments will also create up to 37 full-time positions and more than 150 construction jobs. For the full list of projects, please see backgrounder.

Quotes

“Today’s investment of over $4.5 million directly supports Northern Ontario’s vibrant public spaces and helps local economies in our region thrive and grow. By funding 12 local projects, we will be creating several full-time local jobs, and helping Northern Ontario businesses draw in residents and visitors for years to come!”

- The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor

“We are very happy that the funds announced today will allow us to construct our marketplace building. This project is a cornerstone to upgrading and revitalizing our downtown, and the addition of a focal point like the marketplace will allow our economy to continue to grow in step with our local community. It’s great to see the Government of Canada investing in Burk’s Falls and the Almaguin Highlands, and communities across Northern Ontario.”

- Cathy Still, Mayor of Burk’s Falls
