Regulations Respecting Reduction in the Release of Methane and Certain Volatile Organic Compounds (Upstream Oil and Gas Sector)
These regulations aim to reduce emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from the oil and gas sector to meet Canada’s climate target.
The Regulations have been developed under the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change. A strategic environmental assessment (SEA) was completed for this framework in 2016. The SEA concluded that proposals under the framework will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and are in line with the 2016-2019 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) goal of “Effective action on climate change” (2013-2016 FSDS Goal 1: “Climate Change” and Target 1.1 “Climate Change Mitigation”, Goal 2: Goal 2: “Air Pollution” and Target 2.1 “Outdoor Air Pollutants”).
