What makes Cape Jourimain NWA so special?
Cape Jourimain National Wildlife Area (NWA) is located on a prominent coastal headland in the Northumberland Strait, New Brunswick. Established in 1980, its 621 hectares protect a large variety of wildlife habitats including salt- and fresh-water marshes, intertidal flats, sand dunes, and coastal forest. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded at Cape Jourimain NWA, which also
- as the Osprey, Willet, American Black Duck and a variety of songbirds;
- supports thousands of migrating waterfowl each year, such as Canada Geese, American Black Duck and Northern Pintail;
- attracts an exceptional variety of shorebirds during fall migration--30 species have been recorded, of which 20 occur regularly;
- supports some uncommon plants such as the American Groundnut.
The NWA is bisected by the approach to the Confederation Bridge, which opened in 1997.
What are Environment and Climate Change Canada Protected Areas?
Environment and Climate Change Canada establishes marine and terrestrial NWAs for the purposes of conservation, research and interpretation. NWAs are established to protect migratory birds, species at risk, and other wildlife and their habitats. NWAs are established under the authority of the Canada Wildlife Act and are, first and foremost, places for wildlife.
Migratory Bird Sanctuaries (MBSs) are established under the authority of the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994, and provide a refuge for migratory birds in marine and terrestrial environments. The current Protected Areas Network consists of 54 NWAs and 92 MBSs comprising more than 12 million hectares across Canada.
What can I do at Cape Jourimain NWA?
Access to Cape Jourimain NWA is permitted for activities such as wildlife observation, hiking, canoeing, picnicking and photography. Hunting, trapping and fishing are permitted in accordance with relevant federal and provincial regulations. The Cape Jourimain Nature Centre, operated by a charitable, not-for-profit organization, is open for public visitation from the May long weekend to mid-October.
