Thunder can be heard from a storm as far away as 20 km, however depending on the state of the atmosphere, thunder from storms as little as 8 km away might go undetected.

Question 4: What should you do when you hear thunder?

  1. Continue playing outside until it starts to rain
  2. Take cover under a tree
  3. Take cover only when the thunder is less that 30 seconds away
  4. Immediately take cover in a safe place

Question 5: Where is a safe place to hide when there is thunder and lightning outside?

  1. Under a tree
  2. In a convertible car/jeep with it's roof on
  3. A building with plumbing
  4. A hard topped car
  5. An open sided camping shelter
  6. All of the above
  7. a and b
  8. c and d

Correct Answer: H - Both c and d, a building with plumbing and a hard topped car.

If lightning strikes the building you are in, the current can travel through pipes and electrical wiring. It's best to avoid anything with a cord, such as phones and computers. If you expect a storm, you can also unplug electronics like computers and stereos to prevent damage. Other things to avoid are plumbing, such as sinks, toilets and showers.

If no buildings are available, then an enclosed metal vehicle such as an automobile, van, or school bus makes a decent alternative. If you are inside a vehicle, roll the windows up and avoid contact with any conducting paths leading to the outside of the vehicle (i.e. radios, ignition, etc.).

Question 10: What percent of lightning deaths have occurred after the thunderstorm has passed over?

  1. 1%
  2. 5%
  3. 10%
  4. 20%
  5. 50%
