Calving of Serson Ice Shelf
The Serson Ice Shelf is located on the northeast coast of Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada, approximately 800 km from the North Pole.
On July 31, 2008, satellite imagery showed that two large sections of the Serson Ice Shelf had broken off, each approximately 90 km2. These islands had subsequently fragmented into numerous pieces, some still up to 10km2 that were floating in the Arctic Ocean and drifting slowly westwards.
