Module 5: defining background conditions and using background concentrations

Under the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan (FCSAP), ecological risk assessments (ERAs) are commonly used to manage federal contaminated sites. FCSAP has developed guidance for ERAs in addition to the ones from the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. This guidance document focuses on how existing background conditions (namely, background concentrations of contaminants of concern) can be quantified and used to inform ERAs at federal contaminated sites.
