The amended list of species regulated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) (the CITES Appendices) entered into force on June 12 2013. CITES member countries are required to amend their domestic legislation in order to implement these changes.
Canada is currently in the process of making these amendments to the Wild Animal and Plant Trade Regulations under the Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act (WAPPRIITA). Once the amendments have been made, they will become law in Canada and fully enforceable. The amendments will be published in the Canada Gazette, Part II and a notice will be posted on the Environment Canada CITES to notify stakeholders that the amendments have entered into force in Canada. The CITES species list on the Environment Canada website will not be updated until the new CITES species list is implemented in Canada.
Other countries may already require CITES permits according to the new CITES species list. The new CITES species list (CITES Appendices) is available on the website of the CITES Secretariat.
The amendments are shown in the tables below, which include species deletions from the CITES Appendices, transfers from one Appendix to another, new additions to the Appendices and annotation changes specifying conditions for trading that species. Changes to the scientific name of the species, decided upon at CoP16, are not shown in the tables below but permit officers will make sure the correct name is used on CITES permits. For example, several frog and reptile species names have been changed. For more details on nomenclature changes, consult the CITES document (PDF; 57.5 KB).
