Celebrating 50 years of environmental action in Canada

Celebrating 50 years of environmental action in Canada

In 1971, what began as a department responsible for preserving the natural environment, providing meteorological services and coordinating environmental policies and programs has grown into Environment and Climate Change Canada.

In 2021, we celebrated 50 years of environmental action in Canada and abroad, while the Meteorological Service of Canada marked 150 years of providing quality weather forecasting services and information to Canadians.

We are an organization with more than 7,300 dedicated employees—in offices and labs, on the road and in the field—in 61 cities and towns across Canada. Our passionate people have diverse backgrounds. From biology, hydrology and meteorology, to law enforcement, informatics and engineering, our employees bring their expertise to solve increasingly complex and ever-changing environmental issues.

Throughout 2021, we launched campaigns and page features to celebrate our history. We also highlighted our employees—past and present—who reflect the values that Canadians hold dear—a clean, safe and sustainable environment for Canadians for generations to come.

Join us in looking back on this anniversary year, and learn more about our milestones and the passionate people who have been and continue to be an integral part of ECCC.
