National Institute for People of African Descent
In August 2024, the Government announced that Caribbean African Canadian Social Services (CAFCAN) will establish Canada’s first National Institute for People of African Descent (the Institute). The Government will be awarding $7.25 million, spread over three 3 years, to support CAFCAN’s efforts.
The goal of the Institute is to:
- serve as a centre for research, knowledge, and community engagement
- inform and influence policy and program development at all orders of government from a Black-centred perspective
- improve social and economic outcomes for Canada’s people of African descent and their communities
Establishing the Institute is one of the ways Canada is honouring its commitments under the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent (the Decade). The first Decade ran from 2015 through 2024, which Canada endorsed in 2018. Canada co-sponsored the proposal for a second Decade, which the United Nations adopted in December 2024, and will run from 2025 through 2034.
