Government of Canada supports growing Scarborough food manufacturer
News release
A $5-million FedDev Ontario investment to help a growing Scarborough business scale-up, reach new markets, and contribute to a strong economy
November 3, 2023 – Scarborough, Ontario
In Ontario, our greatest strength is our people. The people behind today’s announcement are a great example of what we can achieve when given the opportunity. The Government of Canada is committed to supporting the growth of entrepreneurs in the food manufacturing sector by providing businesses with the resources they need to create good jobs, accelerate their potential, and bring new food innovations to market.
Today, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), along with the Honourable John McKay, Member of Parliament for Scarborough–Guildwood, announced a $5-million investment towards the growth of Breadsource Corporation (Breadsource), a manufacturer of high-quality baked goods that serves a range of food service companies, schools, grocery stores, and restaurants across Canada.
This investment will support Breadsource in equipping a next-generation, energy-efficient bread production facility in Scarborough that will allow the company to enhance production and offer 40 new bakery products, including gourmet potato rolls and sourdough breads. The energy-efficient facility will also reduce the company’s food and water waste and decrease its overall environmental footprint. As a result, the company will be able to meet increased demands for its baked goods from new and existing customers across North America in an environmentally friendly way. It will also create over 35 new skilled jobs, nearly doubling its workforce.
Today’s announcement supports hardworking manufacturers in the food industry so they can reach their full potential and develop new possibilities for Canadians.
