Government of Canada highlights first all-Canadian-made Electric Vehicle (EV) to demonstrate innovative capabilities in Zero-Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) sector

September 29, 2023 - Hamilton, Ontario

The Government of Canada supports the electric and zero-emissions vehicle industry because we have people who will reach their potential and create new possibilities while contributing to our goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Today, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario); and Chad Collins, Member of Parliament for Hamilton East–Stoney Creek, along with Flavio Volpe, President of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA), visited St. Jean de Brébeuf Catholic High School in Hamilton to display Project Arrow. This made-in-Canada concept vehicle showcases Canada’s capabilities in connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV), and zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) technologies. This was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to students who are preparing to set their academic futures that they could be part of skilled trades in automobility and clean technology, which are creating incredibly innovative ideas.

Project Arrow is a great example of collaboration and Canadian excellence. APMA’s hard work and collaboration delivered this challenge to show the world what Canada can achieve while working together. Over 50 Canadian manufacturers and partners came together to build this incredible concept vehicle. It will now be available for the automobile sector to study and connect with the companies that built it. The Government of Canada was pleased to provide $5.4 million to APMA to support this vehicle.

Quick facts

  • Founded in 1952, the APMA is Canada’s national association representing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) – producers of parts, equipment, tools, supplies, advanced technologies, and services for the automotive industry.

  • The APMA’s fundamental objective is to promote the original equipment automotive supply manufacturing industry both domestically and internationally, providing industry representation to both federal and provincial governments; supporting regional government initiatives; and creating and executing global marketing initiatives to develop trade and business opportunities for its member organizations.

  • In addition to advocacy, the APMA provides its members business development solutions and opportunities as well as guidance and assistance on modernizing their operations to suit the needs of Industry 4.0. APMA members account for 90% of independent parts production in Canada.

  • Flavio Volpe, CEO, is engaged in FedDev Ontario’s Thought Leaders Discussion Group facilitated by Minister Tassi. A great Discussion Group meeting took place September 26 at the APMA’s annual conference.
