Canadian Operation Dates: 1964/11 – 1964/11
Mission Mandate: transport Canadian Red Cross aid to the population in Yugoslavia near Zagreb (now part of the Republic of Croatia.
Mission Notes:
The disastrous Sava River flood near Zagreb, which reached its peak on 26 October 1964, was one of the heaviest floods recorded. The direct damage by the flood alone was immense: 17 casualties, 50,000 homeless, 10,000 homes completely destroyed as well as 3,297 farms, and 120 factories and stores.
Information on the participation of the RCAF to transport any Canadian Red Cross aid is very limited. The historical reports from the Operational Record Book (ORB) for the RCAF Station Trenton and Number 4 (Transport) Operational Training Unit indicated that an RCAF aircraft North Star captained by Flight Lieutenant Zbesheski visited Yugoslavia on a special assignment for the International Red Cross. There is no indication of the passengers and material transported on this flight, or its exact date.
