Social identity factors wheel

The social identity factors wheel is a visual representation mapping out some of the relevant factors to consider when applying Gender-based Analysis Plus for the Department of Defence and Canadian Armed Forces.

Image description

Wheel with different social identity factors listed on the spokes:

  • Age,
  • location,
  • race and ethnicity,
  • language,
  • sexual orientation,
  • rank,
  • unit,
  • occupation,
  • immigration and citizenship,
  • socio-economic status,
  • gender,
  • and family status

For example, gender can include women, men and gender diverse members. Rank can include Sailor 1st Class, Lieutenant (Lt), and Corporal (Cpl). Family status can include single, married, common-law, divorced, separated and widowed.

Keep in mind that what’s listed on the wheel can be changed depending on the application context such as the issue or initiative that GBA Plus is being applied to. For example, if you are reviewing decisions and actions related to planning a sports day, then the relevant social identity factors may be different compared to when you are applying GBA Plus to complete reconnaissance work while on patrol.
