Ministers of National Defence and Veterans Affairs remember the Battle of Britain

Statement

September 15 2024 - Ottawa, Ontario

The Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, have issued the following statement:

“Today is an opportunity to honour all the heroes who fought valiantly in the Battle of Britain during the Second World War.

In the skies, over the United Kingdom and the English Channel, the Battle of Britain was waged from July 10 to October 31, 1940, marking the first major battle fought almost exclusively in the air. Canadian pilots and aircrews served in both the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). More than 100 Canadian pilots and some 300 Canadian ground crew took part in the Battle. Though outnumbered and up against an opposing air force seasoned in air combat, these young men persevered to shift the balance of power. Twenty-three Canadians made the ultimate sacrifice during the battle and approximately 35 others lost their lives by the time victory was achieved in 1945.

The contribution of the RCAF No. 1 Squadron to the Battle of Britain marked the first time our country sent a squadron into battle. Many of its members became leaders of the new RCAF squadrons formed in the United Kingdom and Canada. As the RCAF celebrates its centennial anniversary, remembering the Battle of Britain and RCAF contributions holds great significance.

Today, as we commemorate the Battle of Britain, we salute those from all nations who took part in that crucial battle, as well as the men and women who made aviation history through peace and conflict. An RCAF ceremony, marking its 84th anniversary, commemorating the Battle of Britain – will be held this morning at the Beechwood National Military Cemetery in Ottawa.

As we face an uncertain world, we are inspired by the brave aviators who took part in the Battle of Britain, and showed us that by working together, we can achieve great things.

With unconquerable spirit, they stood firm against a powerful and dangerous adversary. We remember them and their fellow soldiers who never returned home. On this occasion, we pay tribute to their service to our country and recognize the sacrifices they and their families made.”
