A New Commander for 5th Canadian Division

News Release

May 1, 2017 – Halifax, Nova Scotia – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Major-General Carl J. Turenne relinquished command of 5th Canadian Division to Brigadier-General Derek A. Macaulay in a ceremony presided over by Lieutenant-General Paul F. Wynnyk, Commander of the Canadian Army, at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site today.

Moreover, Major-General Turenne was promoted to his current rank today and will assume the position of Deputy Commander of the Canadian Army at Canadian Army Headquarters in Ottawa in early May.

Brigadier-General Macaulay most recently served as Chief of Staff Army Strategy and has held various command and staff positions in Canada and on international operations. He brings this wealth of knowledge and experience to his new command role in Atlantic Canada.

As Commander of 5th Canadian Division, Brigadier-General Macaulay will be responsible for both Regular and Reserve Force Canadian Army units located throughout all four Atlantic Provinces. During his tenure, his priorities will be recruiting, training, and forging an integrated force of highly trained Atlantic Canadian combat and support units that are ready for domestic and international operations in support of Canadian interests.

  • Headquartered in Halifax, 5th Canadian Division is the command element of the Canadian Army in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • 5th Canadian Division’s core mandate is to oversee Canadian Army operations and training in Atlantic Canada in order to generate combat capable forces that are ready to deploy anywhere in Canada and around the world in support of Government of Canada initiatives.

  • The Commander of 5th Canadian Division is responsible for three formations, six independent units, and the 5th Canadian Ranger Patrol Group, which is comprised of thirty–two patrols located across Newfoundland and Labrador. 

  • 5th Canadian Division consists of approximately 6500 Regular and Reserve Force soldiers, civilian employees, and Canadian Rangers.

  • The 5th Canadian Division was recognized in both World Wars by the maroon patch worn on the sleeve of its soldiers. The maroon patch was restored in 2013 by the Minister of National Defence. 

  • The term “Mighty Maroon Machine” was an informal nickname associated with the period in the Italian Campaign during World War II, under command of Major-General Bertram M. Hoffmeister.
