Construction of new military infrastructure begins in Edmonton

The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that Canadian Armed Forces personnel have safe and modern facilities in which to work and train. The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods, on behalf of Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan, held a ground-breaking ceremony today to mark the beginning of construction work of a new facility for Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicles (TAPV) and Armoured Engineer Vehicles (AEV) at 3^rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton.

3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton requires this new facility to shelter 43 TAPV and 14 of the 18 AEV that will be delivered to this location starting in 2017, as part of the Force Mobility Enhancement Project. The remaining four AEV will be housed in existing facilities on base. Five units on base will benefit from the additional storage and maintenance space to carry out their daily tasks as well as safely and effectively maintain the new equipment.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of January 2018.

Quick Facts

• The cost of this infrastructure project is estimated at $39 million, which includes the study, design, construction, administration, and taxes.
• New facilities for TAPV are being constructed in Gagetown, New Brunswick; Valcartier, Quebec; Petawawa, Ontario; and Edmonton, Alberta. Existing facilities in Meaford, Ontario; Shilo, Manitoba; and Valcartier, Quebec, will require renovation and/or additions.
• The design and construction integrate green building concepts and will meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification. LEED promotes environmental sustainability by examining and awarding points to a specific building's performance in five areas of human and environmental health.
