Skilled Marksmanship: The 'Aim' of Canadian Armed Forces Small Arms Concentration

September 2, 2016 — Ottawa — National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces 

The Canadian Armed Forces Small Arms Concentration will take place at the Connaught Ranges and Primary Training Centre in Ottawa from September 5 to 17. Approximately 450 shooters and supporting staff are expected to participate.

The event, which brings together skilled shooters from the Canadian Armed Forces, several Canadian police forces and international teams, is a platform for furthering individual and collective marksmanship skills and an opportunity for professional development in a competitive setting.

  • The Canadian Armed Forces Small Arms Concentration is an annual marksmanship event organized by the Canadian Army. It is designed to enhance and further develop participants’ shooting skills on various standard and dynamic ranges. Participants use their own versions of the service pistol, service rifle, and light machine gun.
  • Participants in the Canadian Armed Forces Small Arms Concentration include individuals and teams from Canada’s Regular Force and Primary Reserve, Canadian Ranger Patrol Groups, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and teams from the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • Individual and team match winners will receive awards, the highest being the Queen’s Medal for Champion Shot. This award is presented to the shooter obtaining the highest aggregate score during the Queen’s Medal matches. Each year, one Queen’s Medal is awarded to the winning Canadian Army Regular Force and Primary Reserve Force and Top Ranger members.
  • The Canadian Armed Forces Small Arms Concentration was first organized by the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association with its national range in La Prairie, Quebec, in 1868. The event took place at various locations in the National Capital Region before finding its current home at the Connaught Ranges Primary Training Centre in 1921.
  • Service weapon proficiency is crucial in developing and maintaining a well-trained and credible military force, ready to meet challenges and to achieve success in its missions.
