Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER: Going beyond the detection and detonation of Improvised Explosive Devices

The Canadian Armed Forces is sending 150 members to participate in this year’s edition of Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER, which will be hosted at 8 Wing, Trenton, from September 11 to 30, 2016.
The aim of Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER, a Canadian Army-led training exercise, is to give participants the opportunity to hone their skills related to countering explosive threats, including improvised explosive devices (IED).
Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER will also include participation from defence and security partner-nations and civilian law enforcement agencies and will specifically focus on explosive threats to domestic and international air operations, including aircraft and associated infrastructure.

Responsible for the planning and coordination of Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER 2016, the Joint Counter Explosive Threat Task Force is the authority for enabling and synchronizing actions to counter explosive threats on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces.

The issue of improvised explosive devices is a global issue that extends well beyond the borders of any single nation. For this year, a total of 15 of Canada’s defence and security allies will participate in Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, India, Israel, the Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Pakistan, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER 2016 is the fourth annual international Explosive Ordnance Disposal exercise held in Canada and greatly improves participants’ ability to counter explosive threats.

Throughout Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER, safety and environmental protection will be emphasized. All exercise devices will be inert.
