Commander of the Canadian Army welcomes the Commander of the Chilean Army on his visit to Canada

April 26, 2016 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
Lieutenant-General Marquis Hainse, Commander of the Canadian Army, will host his counterpart, General Humberto Oviedo Arriagada of the Chilean Army, in Ottawa, Kingston and Québec City from April 26 to 29, 2016. This visit will provide an opportunity for both commanders to discuss bilateral cooperation and training, and clearly demonstrates Canada’s commitment to nurturing partnerships among western partners.
General Humberto Oviedo’s visit will include a trip to 2nd Canadian Division Support Base Valcartier, Quebec, where he will have the opportunity to observe training exercises and view demonstrations conducted by soldiers from 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. He will also visit the Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Center and the Canadian Army Command and Staff College in Kingston, Ontario.

- The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces continue to develop and strengthen defence relations with Chile. Continued engagement of partners in the Americas directly aligns with Canadian defence priorities in the region.
- The Canadian and Chilean Armies have trained together on various exercises and have participated in reciprocal unit exchanges. These experiences have provided each army with valuable opportunities to share lessons learned, explore different capabilities and discuss best practices.
- Canada and Chile are members of the Conference of American Armies (CAA), of which Canada became a member in 1993. The CAA supports two of the Canadian Armed Forces’ three core roles: defend North America and contribute to international peace and security.
