Farewell message from Deputy Minister Bill Matthews
May 31, 2024 - Defence Stories

Today marks my last day as Deputy Minister of National Defence as I depart to become Secretary of the Treasury Board. My two and a half years here as your Deputy Minister have been a highlight of my career, and it has been both an honour and a privilege to serve in this capacity.
I feel extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to work at National Defence a second time. The past few years have been filled with challenges and threats both inside and outside of Canada, and while those challenges will endure, I am more confident than ever in the ability of the Defence Team to respond to them. I have had the opportunity to witness your determination, dedication, and creativity on a daily basis, and that will continue to inspire me.
As I wrap up my final day with the Defence Team, I know you will continue to push forward on the important work we started and the goals towards which we are striving with unequalled professionalism and dedication.
Thank you to Ministers Blair and Anand for their leadership and to the entire Defence Team from coast-to-coast-to-coast for your unwavering commitment to the defence of Canada at home and abroad.
A special thank you to General Eyre. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you. I know the coming months will bring about additional changes in leadership, but I have witnessed firsthand the depth and strength of this organization and know that it will be in good hands.
Your new Deputy Minister, Stefanie Beck, comes with a wealth of experience and understanding about this organization. I am confident that under her leadership, the Department of National Defence is in great hands.
Thank you all.
Bill Matthews
