The CDS bids farewell to Deputy Minister Jody Thomas
January 10, 2022 - Defence Stories
Team,
Today we bid farewell to our friend, colleague, and Deputy Minister of National Defence, Jody Thomas as she takes on a new role and becomes the National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister. She is going into a role of great national importance. A role in which she will continue to provide outstanding support to our institution.
I was both delighted and saddened when I first learned of the news. Delighted because I know there is no one better suited for this role than Jody - she brings an unparalleled breadth of knowledge, expertise, and energy to her new role.
Saddened because today, the Defence Team bids farewell to a valued and trusted teammate. That said, she will always remain a member of our extended Defence Team family.
Personally and professionally, I have a deep respect and admiration for Jody’s many years of service to Canada both in and out of uniform. First, as a young Naval Reservist, and since October 2017, as our Deputy Minister of National Defence. Prior to that, she served as Senior Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence, was the first woman to serve as Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard, and served in several other senior roles within the public service.
Jody has led courageously through extremely difficult times and has remained a champion for under-represented voices. She exemplifies the very best of public service. She is selfless with her time, represents Canada with distinction in international fora, and demonstrates a relentless commitment to supporting the defence and security interests of our country.
I have always trusted her sage council, appreciated her collaborative approach, and valued her friendship and outstanding teamwork.
On behalf of the entire Defence Team, I thank Jody for her many contributions to the Defence Team, congratulate her on her new appointment, and thank her and her family for their unwavering support to our Defence Team and all Canadians.
I also welcome Deputy Minister Bill Matthews back to the department. Bill served as our Senior Associate Deputy Minister from 2017-2019 and I look forward continuing this positive partnership with him as we work together to strengthen our Defence Team for all of our members and continue to defend Canada and all Canadians.
General Wayne Eyre
