Surgeon General Message on Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month 2021

October 28, 2021 - Defence Stories

This year, the theme of Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month is Feel Great at Work! with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion. The health and wellness approach of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) considers the psychosocial and physical work environment, as well as personal health factors, which include the physical, mental, spiritual, social/cultural, financial and familial aspects of members’ lives. The importance we place on inclusion within the CAF is the first indicator of our understanding of the various health concerns of CAF members in all communities.

A year and a half has passed since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and caring for our physical and mental health and personal well-being has never been more important. Over the next few months, Strengthening the Forces will be publishing Maple Leaf articles on a variety of topics connected to the health of our CAF members; from substance abuse, to coping with stress, to nutrition, the Self-Care Series will highlight the importance of the mental and physical well-being of CAF members and their families, and offer advice on becoming healthier overall. When members, especially those who identify with various communities within our Forces, feel supported and encouraged through their leadership to prioritize their personal well-being, the entire organization benefits.

I encourage you to take note of the helpful resources and services provided throughout this month, and use them when you or someone you know needs mental health and personal well-being support. Early care and support for mental health issues are key. Watch for changes in the behaviour of your coworkers, employees, friends and family members, and encourage them to seek help if need be.
