Message from the new Minister of National Defence

Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to take a moment to say “hello”! In this time of considerable change, it is my honour to be appointed as Canada’s Minister of National Defence.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made life trying for all Canadians. At the same time, we have witnessed an unprecedented level of collaboration at DND, undertaking Canada’s longest-ever domestic operation in response to the pandemic. I would like to recognize and thank all of the Defence Team members who have contributed to the fight against COVID-19. You have supported communities across the country and I thank you sincerely for your work.

The Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces are a crucial element in our nation’s fabric. Those in uniform and our entire Defence Team dedicate their lives to safeguarding our country and our citizens. It is a privilege to lead this exceptional institution and I am committed to equipping you with the resources needed to support our efforts at home and abroad.

Everyone deserves a workplace that is healthy, safe, and inclusive regardless of gender, sexual or gender identity, disability, race, or religious beliefs. My top priority is to make sure that everyone in the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence feels safe and protected. We must provide all necessary support when our members need it, and ensure that we have structures in place to ensure that justice is served.

There is no one magic solution for this issue. This is going to take time. But I, and our government, will put in the work for as long as it takes. We will need leaders at all levels in the Defence Team to play an integral role in ensuring that our culture and professional conduct align with the core values and principles of our institution.

I also acknowledge the contributions and dedication of my colleague, the Hon. Harjit S. Sajjan, who served as Minister of National Defence for six years. I wish him well in his new role as Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada.

I look forward to working closely with Deputy Minister Jody Thomas, Acting Chief of the Defence Staff General Wayne Eyre, and with each of you in my new role to build upon the impressive work you do every day in service to Canada. I hope to hear from as many of you, both civilian and military, as possible and I plan to consult with you directly over the coming weeks and months.

Thank you again for everything you do to serve Canadians.

Yours sincerely,

The Honourable Anita Anand, PC, MP
Minister of National Defence
