Defence O365 — We’ve enabled video and voice chat on the DWAN!
October 16, 2020 – Defence Stories

Since the rollout of Defence Office O365, Assistant Deputy Minister (Information Management) (ADM(IM)) has continued to work on the platform, improving Defence Team members’ user experience.
As of 14 September 2020, personnel who work on the Defence Wide Area Network (DWAN) have access to the video, voice, and screen sharing functionalities on Microsoft Teams (MS Teams). This functionality was enabled to primarily support personnel who were working onsite. This will exclude those who are deployed, or who are on Navy ships. Please note, MS Live Events (i.e. Townhalls) will not be accessible on the DWAN.
For personnel who are teleworking and have a personal device available, you are strongly encouraged to use your personal device to connect to MS Teams, as opposed to your DND/CAF issued device, in order to protect the integrity of our networks.
How to connect to MS Teams from the DWAN
There are currently two ways to access MS Teams on the DWAN: the Chrome browser or the MS Teams desktop application.
Chrome
If you do not already have Chrome installed on your DND/CAF issued computer, download the application from “Run Advertised Programs” in your “Control Panel”.
- Open the web browser, and go to https://www.office.com
- Log in with your Defence O365 email address (@ecn.forces.gc.ca) and password.
- Click the MS Teams icon, and connect to your meeting.
Microsoft Teams desktop application
- Download the application from “Run Advertised Programs” in your “Control Panel” or “Software Center” in the “Start Menu”.
- Open the application and log in using your Defence O365 email address (@ecn.forces.gc.ca).
- Connect to your meeting.
If you have yet to onboard to Defence O365, ask your manager to identify your L1 Power User (accessible only via Defence O365) and contact them for instructions on creating your account.
If you have additional questions in regards to accessing MS Teams on the DWAN, please refer to the DWAN Microsoft Teams Video and Voice Meetings FAQ (accessible only via the DWAN).
For additional support, please refer to the online user guide(s), or the Microsoft Teams’ guide (accessible only via Defence O365).
