In the heart of Ottawa, Ontario, on October 27th, 2023, two of Canada's esteemed infantry regiments, The Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and the Royal 22nd Regiment (R22eR), will face off in the historic Imjin Hockey Classic.
This annual tradition is not just a game, it's a heartfelt commemoration honoring those who served in the Korean War, which took place between June 1950 and July 1953. In particular, we remember the 516 that never returned home. The game serves as a reminder of their dedication and valour.
Seventy-one years ago, on March 11, 1952, PPCLI and R22eR played a historic ice hockey game on the frozen Imjin River. Since 2013, they have kept this tradition alive with an annual commemorative game. It also symbolizes the enduring camaraderie between Canada and South Korea, showcasing the lasting bonds forged during times of conflict.

Major Joshua Robbins, R22eR Team Manager describes it as “an excellent way to celebrate those who served before us and a testament to how well our two nations cooperate.”
“I expect it to be an exciting match, but I really look forward to the camaraderie of sharing war stories with them and our Korean War veterans after the game.”
This year's event also offers an exciting warm-up game featuring General and Flag officers and Foreign Service Attaches squaring off against the Parliament Hill Hockey Team.
An opening ceremony precedes the main event. This includes the introduction of VIPs and teams, a moving speech about the Imjin Classic's significance, the playing of national anthems, and the ceremonial puck drop.

Then the R22eR and PPCLI teams will face off in the legendary game. The teams will consist of serving members from their respective regiments who are employed within the National Capital Region.
“It’s great to get the opportunity for us to get out on the ice to engage in some good-natured competition in the name of commemoration.” Explains Major Zack Gatehouse, PPCLI Team Manager, “At the end of the day, it’s just about all being together, sharing laughs and sharing a passion for hockey like our respective regimental brothers and sisters did so many years ago.”
The Imjin Hockey Classic is not just a sporting event; it's an opportunity for the community to come together and support Canadian Army personnel. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. at the TD Place Arena, and the best part is, admission is free. So, mark your calendars for October 27th, and join us in honoring our heroes and celebrating seven decades of tradition at the Imjin Hockey Classic 2023.
