Hello, I’m Master Warrant Officer Frédéric-François Desmarais, and I’m the Operations Sergeant-Major at Joint Task Force North HQ.
What I like about being here in Yellowknife with the HQ is being at the front lines of the true Canadian North. It reminds me of growing up in the Eastern Townships in Quebec—everywhere you look, there’s snow, snow activities, like skiing and snowmobiling.
What really surprised me was the number of Francophones in Yellowknife, and even in the other northern territories of Canada. We make up a little over 3% of the population in the North. We’re everywhere up here. We’re in the stores. We’re in the Association franco-culturelle de Yellowknife, the Northwest Territories French Federation, and the other francophone associations in Yukon and Nunavut. There are plenty of cultural or social activities to get involved in. There are even yoga classes in French here in Yellowknife!
I feel very lucky to be here in the Canadian North. It’s a unique experience. It’s really something special, magical.
